Heamatology

Hematology tests include tests on the blood, blood proteins and blood-producing organs. These tests can evaluate a variety of blood conditions including infection, anemia, inflammation, hemophilia, blood-clotting disorders, leukemia and the body's response to chemotherapy treatments. Common hematology tests:

• White blood cell count (WBC)
• Red blood cell count (RBC)
• Platelet count.
• Hematocrit red blood cell volume (HCT)
• Hemoglobin concentration (HB). This is the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells.
• Differential white blood count.
• Red blood cell indices (measurements)

Biochemistry

The biochemical profile is a series of blood tests used to evaluate the functional capacity of several critical organs and systems, such as the liver and kidneys. These tests can be done on an empty stomach or not, and are usually accompanied by a complete blood count (CBC).

Immunology/Immuno Assay

Immunologic tests employ an antigen to detect presence of antibodies to a pathogen, or an antibody to detect the presence of an antigen, of the pathogen in the specimens. The immunological tests used in laboratories are made by producing artificial antibodies that exactly “match” the pathogen in question.

Clinical Pathology

Pathology tests cover blood tests, and tests on urine, stools (faeces) and bodily tissues. A pathologist interprets the results of blood and pathology tests and looks for abnormalities that may point to disease, such as cancer and other chronic illnesses, or health risks, such as pre-diabetes.

Microbiology

Microbiological analysis of food products is the use of biological, biochemical, molecular or chemical methods for the detection, identification or enumeration of microorganisms in a material (e.g. food, drink, environmental or clinical sample).

Molecular Biology

Molecular biological testing has become a mainstay in the repertoire of infectious disease diagnostics like in no other field of medicine. Direct pathogen detection primarily relies upon two main methods: the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunochromatography – often supplied as test strips or test cards.

Serology

The antibody or serology test is done to ascertain a previous viral infection and the body's immune response towards it. It screens antibodies, which are proteins in the blood produced by the immune system that combat infections such as viruses. Antibody testing may help avoid future occurrences of the same infection.

Genetics Tests

Genes are DNA instructions that we all inherit from our parents. Different “mistakes” in our genes, called mutations, can cause different diseases. Some of these diseases are rare, like cystic fibrosis or Huntington’s disease, others are common, like cancer. Genetic tests can be used to confirm the diagnosis or give you information about possible development of a disease.

Cytology

Aside from tissue biopsy, cytology serves as an indispensable tool in screening and diagnosing cancer. In this technique, a cytological material is obtained from the patient, spread onto glass slides for microscopic examination, stained, screened for abnormalities and assessed prior to the issuance of a final report.
